A true MTSS framework is about prevention, not reaction. When districts start with strong core instruction built on how kids learn literacy and math, fewer students require intensive support. This proactive, schoolwide approach uses reliable data to provide the right level of support when students need it.
When screening, core instruction, intervention, and professional learning work together, educators can identify needs earlier, respond without losing valuable instructional time, and help more students stay on track.

What should schools evaluate first in the MTSS process?
Rather than simply sorting students into intervention groups, an MTSS should prioritize prevention and continuous improvement across the system.
Before moving students into more intensive support, school teams should examine three connected questions:
- Is Tier 1 instruction giving all students access to grade-level content and effective instruction?
- Are students who begin on track maintaining their progress over time?
- When students need additional support, is that support connected to the content, language, and routines of core instruction?

One shared foundation for a literacy and math MTSS
Across subjects, Amplify brings one cohesive system based on evidence about how students learn.
- Universal screening and progress monitoring help you better understand student needs, evaluate the health of Tier 1 instruction, and identify changes in performance over time.
- Daily instruction from research-backed core programs brings clear routines, grade-level content, and embedded support for varied learners.
- Teacher-led and digital support aligned with the skills and concepts students are learning in class provide targeted intervention and practice across tiers.

Assess and monitor
Universal screening and progress monitoring
- Literacy: mCLASS® DIBELS® 8th Edition and mCLASS Lectura help educators identify reading needs and monitor progress through direct teacher-student assessment experiences.
- Math: mCLASS Math captures student responses and mathematical ways of thinking, making misconceptions and prerequisite needs more visible.

Instruct and support
Research-backed core instruction
- Literacy: Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)/ELA and Amplify Caminos provide systematic, explicit instruction grounded in the Science of Reading.
- Math: Amplify Desmos Math provides a structured, problem-based approach that builds mathematical understanding, fluency, and confidence.
Differentiate and intervene
Targeted intervention and practice
- Literacy: Boost Reading, Boost Lectura, and mCLASS Intervention provide targeted support through teacher-led digital experiences.
- Math: Boost Math® provides topic-connected pathways that help students build prerequisite understanding while staying connected to grade-level learning.

An MTSS in action
A complete schoolwide framework brings together the resources, data, and people needed to support students across every tier.
Make the next step clearer.
Assessment should do more than sort students by performance—it should also help educators understand how students are thinking, and identify a useful next step. Amplify brings together transparent, actionable data and instructional resources so educators can:
- See whether students are maintaining progress, not just whether they’re below benchmark.
- Identify the prerequisite skill, misconception, or instructional need.
- Connect data from screening and progress monitoring to core instruction and targeted support.

Support for the people doing the work
An effective MTSS depends on more than programs. Districts need practical guidance, sustained learning, and support for the educators and families who make implementation possible.
That’s why we’ve designed our programs to give leaders and educators the guidance they need to connect assessment, core instruction, intervention, and progress monitoring—and sustain the work over time.

Connect support across every tier.
Amplify brings together transparent, actionable data and instructional resources so educators can:
- See whether students are maintaining progress, not just whether they’re below benchmark.
- Identify the prerequisite skill, misconception, or instructional need behind a response.
- Connect evidence from screening and progress monitoring to core instruction and targeted support.
- Make informed decisions while preserving teacher judgment and student voice.

Why choose Amplify for your schoolwide MTSS framework?
With Amplify, core instruction, assessment, targeted support, and professional learning are designed to work together.
Compare how Amplify’s coherent system of supports stacks up against traditional frameworks for instruction.
An Amplify MTSS framework
- Literacy and math programs are grounded in evidence and built around how students learn each subject.
- Uses screening, progress monitoring, and classroom evidence to examine whether core instruction is working for all learners before escalating support.
- Assessment, core instruction, and intervention are connected through shared concepts, language, routines, and expectations.
- Educators can better understand students through an asset-based approach to performance and help identify next steps.
- Features a multi-modal mix of teacher-led small groups, hands-on print, and digital practice.
- Dedicated Spanish literacy programs and Spanish-language math supports help expand access for multilingual/English learner students.
- Teachers remain central to assessment and instruction, with guidance along the way.
Other programs
- Teams may need to connect separate programs, data systems, and instructional approaches on their own.
- May focus primarily on placing individual students into support without a consistent system-level view of core instruction.
- Students may encounter different language, routines, and expectations as they move between core instruction and intervention.
- May include lengthy, black-box multiple-choice tests that only count raw right/wrong answers.
- 100%-solo screen time isolates students on individual devices.
- Employs generic translation without true biliteracy progressions.
- Employs generic professional development that doesn’t factor in the reality of classrooms.

Frequently asked questions about MTSS
Get answers to common questions about implementing a unified K–8 MTSS framework across literacy and math.
An RTI, or response to intervention, is often used to describe support for students who are already struggling. An MTSS, or Multi-Tiered System of Supports, is a broader, proactive framework that begins with strong Tier 1 instruction for all students, uses data to monitor how the system is working, and adds targeted or intensive support when needed.
Instructional coherence means that assessment, core instruction, intervention, and professional learning reinforce one another. Students encounter connected language, concepts, routines, and expectations instead of moving between unrelated programs.
To connect literacy and math within an MTSS, Amplify uses a shared cycle—assess and monitor, instruct and support, differentiate and intervene—across both subjects. The framework and decision-making process are connected, while the assessments, instructional resources, and interventions reflect the distinct ways students learn literacy and math.
An MTSS evaluates whether Tier 1 is working first by having teams look at multiple data points, including whether students are meeting expectations and whether students who begin on track remain on track. If patterns show that many students are not maintaining progress, the first response includes examining core instruction and the supports around it (not just assigning more intervention).
Amplify connects intervention to core instruction by providing targeted support focused on the skills and concepts students are learning in class. This helps educators address prerequisite needs while keeping students connected to grade-level instruction.
In practice, schools using an MTSS follow a recurring process: screen and monitor student progress, examine Tier 1 instruction, provide differentiated or targeted support, and use new evidence to adjust instruction. The exact schedule, group size, and intervention structure will reflect district policy, staffing, and student needs.
There is no single schedule that determines how often students should receive MTSS support, as no one schedule fit every district or student. Schools should set the frequency and duration of screening, progress monitoring, core instruction, and intervention according to their adopted framework, student data, staffing, and required state or district guidance.
