Description

Mastery: Student is able to spell words with variant vowel combinations (e.g. ie, au, ough) and diphthongs (e.g. oy, ow).

 

Acquiring: Student is able to spell words with variant vowel combinations (e.g. ie, au, ough) and diphthongs (e.g. oy, ow) with the aid of a teacher or when referring to a sound/spelling card.

Probes

T: Spell (or write) the following words: pie, slow, fought, through, sight, clown, soil, proud, joy, foot, stew, jaw, soul, vault, root.

• Students should have a firm foundation of saying and reading variant vowel combinations and diphthongs before they are able to produce the spelling of words with these digraphs, trigraphs, and diphthongs.
• For this skill, students should be able to spell words with igh, ough, oy, and ow rather than locating the words in a list or word search.
