Description
Mastery: Student silently recognizes double final consonants as having one sound and decodes regularly spelled one-syllable words with double final consonants with automaticity (only says final sound once).
Acquiring: Student sounds out the initial sound, medial vowel sound, and final double consonants, before blending. Student self-corrects if he/she initially says the final sound twice. Student may need a reminder from the teacher or help from a sound/spelling card.

Considerations & Reminders
When teaching students about double final consonants, using the “floss” rule is helpful for words that end with /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/.
