Education technology pioneer Amplify raises significant funding to help expand its K-12 portfolio

(BROOKLYN, NY – May 23, 2023) Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, announced today it has raised a Series C funding round led by Cox Enterprises, a family-owned, Atlanta-based company committed to connectivity, mobility, and sustainable innovation. Cox joins Amplify’s current investors, including Emerson Collective, Learn Capital, and A-Street Ventures.

The funding will support Amplify in continuing to expand the breadth and depth of its K-12 product portfolio, which distinctly combines high-quality, evidence-based instruction with digital-forward delivery to help teachers celebrate and extend their students’ thinking, knowledge, and skills. Already a market leader in literacy and science, Amplify is launching a suite of math programs that will reshape mathematics education by bringing together the leading open-source curriculum (IM K-12 Math™ authored by Illustrative Mathematics®) with the most-beloved teaching and learning platform in math education, Desmos Classroom. The goal is to help every student learn – and learn to love – mathematics.

Kareem Weaver

Kareem Weaver is an award-winning educator and community advocate with extensive experience leading schools and systems in district, juvenile justice, and managed-care settings. His advocacy is featured in the 2023 documentary The Right to Read.

Kareem has worked with the Council of the Great City Schools, the College Board, and the Ontario Human Rights Commission on literacy as a civil right. He has offered diagnostic support to districts, states, and educator preparation programs; presented at over 100 conferences, departments of education, universities, and community organizations; and led field visits for system leaders, all in service of bringing clarity to the literacy crisis and illuminating the most productive path forward so that all children have access to Full and Complete Reading, which is a Universal Mandate (FULCRUM). He is the current second vice president and education committee chair for the Oakland NAACP.

Ana has been an educator for 30 years, working in both the K–8 and higher education sectors. She served as an administrator and instructor at various public and private colleges and universities and as a bilingual and dual language teacher, dual language math and reading interventionist, dual language instructional coach, assistant principal, and principal in K–8 schools. Ana is currently the bilingual and multilingual specialist on Amplify’s product specialist team, and delivers literacy and biliteracy presentations across the nation. Ana’s passion and advocacy for biliteracy and multiculturalism has led her to educate leaders, teachers, and parents about the positive impact of bilingualism and biliteracy in our world.

Amplify Awards Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio (D-West Covina) with the 2025 Leader in Education Award

BROOKLYN, NY (January 30, 2025) – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today awarded California Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio the 2025 Leader in Education Award. This annual award honors and recognizes legislators who have demonstrated dedication and creativity in improving learning opportunities for all students.

Since her election to California’s 48th district in 2016, Assemblywoman Rubio has made education a cornerstone of her legislative work, with a particular focus on improving early literacy and reading outcomes for California students. Her multi-year effort to advance evidence-based literacy instruction culminated in September with the passage of Assembly Bill 1454 (AB 1454), which she led in partnership with Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) and Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), Chair of the Assembly Education Committee. 

AB 1454 represents a comprehensive approach to ensuring California’s children learn to read proficiently and on schedule, including:

  • Robust training in evidence-based practices, such as Evidence-Based Literacy Instructional (EBLI), which emphasize explicit and systematic phonics instruction, phonetic awareness, and fluency development
  • Updated guidance for the adoption of ELAD/ELD instructional materials for grades K–8 
  • Ensuring that both current and future instructional materials are also grounded in evidence-based literacy practices

“I’m honored to be recognized with the 2025 Leader in Education award,” said Rubio. “Education has been foundational to my own success; it is the pathway for the success of countless others, and because of this, it is a cornerstone of my work in the Assembly.  I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished with AB 1454. This legislation represents years of partnership with educators, advocates, and legislative leaders who share the vision that every child deserves to learn to read well and on time. This recognition belongs to everyone who helped make this reform a reality. ”

Rubio’s successful advocacy for the Bill garnered support from a broad coalition committed to California’s literary excellence. Her commitment to improving student reading outcomes across California comes at a critical time, when focused efforts are needed to ensure all students reach their full reading potential and achieve academic success.

New data: early literacy readiness reaches post-pandemic high, but slowing momentum requires urgent focus on foundational skills

Brooklyn, NY (October 16, 2025) – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today released a research brief on the latest K–2 beginning-of-school-year literacy data. Findings reveal that at the beginning of the 2025–2026 school year, 48 percent of K–2 students were on track to learn to read, marking the highest literacy readiness level since the start of the pandemic. However, year-over-year progress has plateaued, and students have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, highlighting the ongoing need for strong foundational skills instruction and support for struggling readers in the early grades.

The data also underscore the importance of early intervention. Longitudinal analysis shows that K-2 students who began the school year behind in reading readiness but managed to catch up by the end of the year were likely to remain on track through the end of third grade. The findings highlight how critical it is to intervene as early as possible to get students on track, as the likelihood of students achieving reading proficiency by third grade increases the earlier it happens.

“It’s encouraging to see nearly half of our youngest students ready for core instruction. This is a testament to the hard work of educators and the impact of evidence-based practices in the classroom,” said Susan Lambert, chief academic officer, elementary humanities, at Amplify. “However, the data point to a worrisome stall in year-over-year progress. This is a critical moment for a renewed, laser focus on early intervention. Our longitudinal findings make it abundantly clear: the earlier we get a student on track in K–2, the greater their likelihood of achieving reading success by the end of third grade.”

Amplify recommends that districts and schools consider administering a universal screener three times a year to follow student progress in early reading. With that information in hand, educators can make more informed decisions related to:

  • Identifying students who need additional support;
  • Ensuring all students receive quality instruction grounded in evidence-based practices, such as the Science of Reading;
  • Developing plans for addressing student needs and allocating resources to implement those plans; and
  • Regularly monitoring student progress and making adjustments as needed.

Dr. Rosemarie T. Truglio is the Senior Vice President of Curriculum and Content at Sesame Workshop. Elham Kazemi

Elham Kazemi is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Washington. She studies how strong professional communities develop in schools and how schools can be organized so teachers learn from and with their students. This work is informed by research on organizational learning, children’s mathematical thinking, and classroom practice.  She is co-author with Allison Hintz of Intentional Talk, which focuses on leading productive discussions in mathematics. Fluency in math can oftentimes be associated with negative experiences with its development— timed worksheets, for example. Bethany and Dan are joined by three guests to better understand fluency and how to make its approach fun. Dr. Val Henry shares her three-part definition of fluency and her five principles for developing it. Valerie Henry, Graham Fletcher, and Tracy Johnston Zager

Valerie Henry has been a math educator since 1986. She taught middle school math for 17 years and has worked as a lecturer at University of California Irvine since 2002. After doing her 2004 dissertation research on addition/subtraction fluency in first grade, Valerie created FactsWise, a daily mini-lesson approach that simultaneously develops fluency, number sense, and algebraic thinking. Additionally, she has provided curriculum and math professional development for K-12 teachers throughout her career, working with individual schools, districts, county offices of education, Illustrative Mathematics, the SBAC Digital Library, and the UCI Math Project.

Graham Fletcher has served in education as a classroom teacher, a math coach, and currently as a math specialist. Lani Horn centers her research on ways to make authentic mathematics accessible to students, particularly those who have been historically marginalized by our educational system. Professor Horn focuses primarily on mathematics teaching in two ways. First, Professor Horn looks at classroom practices that engage the most students in high-quality mathematics. Fawn Nguyen began her work with Amplify in 2022 as a Math Advance Team Specialist. She was a math coach for a K-8 school district for three years, and a middle school teacher for 30 years before that. Fawn has also received a number of accolades as an educator.

Christy Thompson is a Literacy Coach in Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. She has spent her teaching and coaching career particularly focused on listening to and learning from the talk of our youngest students.

Donnie Piercey and Jennifer Roberts

Jen Roberts is a Nationally Board Certified high school English teacher with more than 25 years of experience teaching social science and English Language Arts in grades 7-12. She has had 1:1 laptops for her students since 2008 and is the co-author of Power Up: Making the Shift to 1:1 Teaching and Learning. A Google for Education Certified Innovator since 2011, Jen was named the CUE Outstanding Educator in 2022. Her interests include literacy instruction, standards based grading, and leveraging Google tools to make her teaching more efficient and effective.

Donnie Piercey, the 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, is a fifth-grade teacher in Lexington, Kentucky.  With a passion for utilizing technology to promote student inquiry, learning, and engagement, he has been teaching since 2007. In addition to being in the classroom, he runs a podcast, Teachers Passing Notes that is produced by the Peabody Award winning GZMShows, and holds several recognitions, including a National Geographic Fellowship to Antarctica in 2018. His most recent work in Artificial Intelligence has not gone unnoticed, earning him multiple appearances on Good Morning America, the Associated Press, and PBS. His upcoming book, “50 Strategies for Integrating AI in the Classroom” published by Teacher Created Materials, is written for educators looking for practical classroom approaches to using AI. Eric earned a bachelor’s degree from Azusa Pacific University and a Master of Education from the University of San Diego. He had 17 years of experience working with at-risk youth and underserved populations before becoming a middle school teacher. By building relationships with students, colleagues, and the community, he has become an empowered leader in and out of the classroom. Through meaningful learning experiences centered around student agency, STEM has become accessible to students through highly engaging lesson design, thoughtful integration of digital tools, and pedagogy that engages students from all backgrounds.

Valerie Henry Ed.D.

Valerie Henry, Ed.D. has been a math educator since 1986. She taught middle school math for 17 years and has worked as a lecturer at UC Irvine since 2002. After doing her 2004 dissertation research on addition/subtraction fluency in first grade, Valerie created FactsWise, a daily mini-lesson approach that simultaneously develops  fluency,  number sense and algebraic thinking. Thousands of teachers have used Valerie’s  books, classroom videos, screencasts, and online courses for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division to integrate fluency into their daily routines.

Valerie has provided curriculum and math professional development for K-12 teachers throughout her career, working with individual schools, districts, county offices of education, Illustrative Mathematics, the SBAC Digital Library, and the UCI Math Project. She has  an Ed.D. from UCLA/UCI and a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from UC Davis, is credentialed in both Multiple and Single Subject mathematics and received National Board Certification in early adolescent mathematics.

Myuriel von Aspen

Myuriel is the multiple subject coordinator for the MAT + Credential program at the University of California, Irvine. She has both teaching and coaching experience in elementary schools in Orange County, California, including seven years as a first and fourth grade teacher in a Spanish-English dual immersion school. She has worked in projects with Student Achievement Partners, UnboundED, and Illustrative Mathematics. Myuriel holds a bachelor of science in computer science from the Florida International University, and a master of business administration and master of arts in teaching from the University of California, Irvine. The core belief that drives her work is that all children are capable of learning challenging math. Our role as educators is to remove barriers, provide access and opportunities for children to make sense, engage in meaningful discussions, and develop their identities as competent doers and learners.

New study: When combined with Amplify CKLA, Boost Reading significantly improves student progress

BROOKLYN, NY (January 27, 2025) – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today released the results of a study on the impact of using Boost Reading™, an adaptive K–5 personalized learning program grounded in the Science of Reading. Designed to complement the Amplify Core Knowledge and Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum, Boost Reading provides both intervention and enrichment support, reinforcing Amplify CKLA’s core instruction.

Findings reveal that Boost Reading accelerates growth for K-5 students already using Amplify CKLA. On average across grades, Amplify CKLA students who began the year at below-average reading levels and used Boost Reading for 30 minutes a week or more were 18 percent more likely to exceed national benchmarks for reading growth relative to students who did not.

Boost Reading is an adaptive and student-led program that tailors practice to each student’s individual needs, reinforcing core knowledge topics while addressing critical skill gaps. It integrates into any classroom model, allowing for full independent practice and freeing teachers to work with other students.

“It’s clear that Boost Reading and Amplify CKLA are powerful, research-backed tools that have the potential to help many K-5 students,” said Melissa Ulan, executive vice president of the literacy suite at Amplify. “Because they share the same pedagogical foundation and sequencing of foundational skills, when you combine the two, you really start to see accelerated growth. This is particularly important given the literacy rates among students nationwide.”

The study included more than 90,000 students who used Boost Reading for at least 30 minutes a week and a comparison group of more than 90,000 students who did not use Boost Reading, matched on key student characteristics. Students’ reading skills were measured using mCLASS® DIBELS® 8th Edition.

Amplify launches custom speech recognition technology using AI to power next-generation voice-enabled learning

Brooklyn, NY – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, announced the development of a custom Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system designed to power voice-enabled education products.

The Amplify ASR system converts spoken language into written text, enabling users to interact with educational software using voice command while providing detailed feedback on pronunciation, prosody, and more. The technology supports multiple applications, including reading assessment, conversational tutoring, digital activity input, and classroom monitoring. Amplify’s ASR application will also compare student speech to target texts and identify areas where teachers can provide additional support for reading fluency and comprehension.

The latest edition of Amplify ELA receives highest rating from EdReports for grades six through eight

Amplify awarded grant for math curriculum designed to benefit diverse students

Brooklyn, NY (March 18, 2021) — Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today announced that Amplify has been awarded a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s “Balance the Equation: A Grand Challenge for Algebra 1” (The Grand Challenge) grant program. The program selected education partners who have designed solutions to make Algebra 1 more accessible, relevant, and collaborative for Black, Latino, English language learners, and students experiencing poverty.

To help students gain a deeper conceptual understanding of data and statistics, Amplify, in partnership with the English Learners Success Forum, is developing a solution that leverages a visual approach to learning mathematics, making advanced concepts more accessible to a broader population of students, especially students learning English. Building on both algebraic and geometric concepts from earlier grades, the materials enable students to better apply statistics to their everyday lives.

For nearly two decades, The Grand Challenge has focused on addressing key global health and development problems by seeking out and engaging the world’s brightest minds through an open and transparent process focused on the best ideas most likely to make an impact. “Balance the Equation: A Grand Challenge for Algebra“ is the foundation’s first education-focused challenge, centered on the importance of providing all students with high-quality, equitable Algebra 1 education.

“We are grateful to the foundation for the opportunity to be a partner in their effort to transform and rethink the traditional math classroom to better support students who have been historically marginalized in math,” said Zach Wissner-Gross, vice president of math education at Amplify. “Amplify Math seeks to improve statistical literacy and conceptual understanding in our country, and we are honored to be awarded the opportunity to build atop the statistics units of our already strong math curriculum.”

Amplify is one of 15 grantees receiving a Phase 1 grant of $100,000. Later this summer, 8–10 grantees will receive up to $1M from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to design solutions to make Algebra 1 a gateway, rather than a gatekeeper, to future success. For students who do not complete Algebra 1, their chances of graduating from high school are one in five. Black and Latino students, English language learners, and students experiencing poverty are particularly affected, putting these students at a disadvantage in pursuing high-paying, in-demand careers.

Amplify enters supplemental curriculum market

New York, NY – (June 25, 2018) Amplify, a company that creates next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, announced today that it is entering the digital supplemental market in reading and math with two new supplemental programs, Amplify Close Reading and Amplify Fractions. These new supplemental products join Amplify’s growing portfolio of core curriculum and assessment programs for grades K-8.

“Digital supplemental programs in reading and math are widely used, but they’re often repetitive and focused on drilling students in skills versus developing conceptual understanding that take kids deeper and deeper into a particular field,” said Larry Berger, CEO of Amplify. “We have found that teachers and students love Amplify’s conceptually rich, story-based programs that provide both high-quality instruction and practice.”

Amplify Close Reading takes the form of a digital graphic novel adventure, engaging students in a suspenseful story while helping them master close reading skills covered by ELA standards in grades 6-8. Titled “The Last Readers,” the graphic novel is set in a dystopian future world run by machines that tell people what they can and can’t read. Recruited for the rebellion, students are trained in the powerful ways authors convey meaning and affect their audience.

Close reading, the practice of analyzing a text to determine what it says and how it says it, is a skill prioritized by recent middle school ELA standards, which have placed renewed emphasis on text-dependent analysis of literary and informational texts. Amplify Close Reading was developed in partnership with literacy expert Tim Shanahan, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chi­cago.

Amplify Fractions covers math standards in grades 3–6 and offers a new approach to learning fractions through a blend of adaptive learning and interactive storytelling. A research team led by Carnegie Mellon University’s Robert Siegler found that 5th graders’ understanding of fractions and division predicted high school students’ knowledge of algebra and overall math achievement and that U.S. students’ inadequate knowledge of fractions and division is a major source of the stagnant growth in the subject.

“Fractions are one of the most difficult concepts for students,” said Rebecca Gilbreath-Levan, a 4th-grade teacher at Double Churches Elementary School in Columbus, GA. “With Amplify Fractions, I found a program that actually excites my students to want to learn and practice fractions. Students remembered the characters and stories in the program, which is a great thing to fall back on to remember the concept.”

Educators were able to sign up for the beta version of both programs for the 2017-18 school year. The full versions are now available.

Amplify expands supplemental offerings with K–8 adaptive reading program

Amplify Science releases substantial, free enhancements based on teacher feedback

Based on feedback from teachers, which the Amplify team gathers on a regular basis through a variety of channels, the new elements available as part of Amplify Science this 2019-2020 school year include:

  • Classroom Slides, fully editable time-saving supports for teachers, with lesson visuals, activity instructions, animations, investigation setup videos, technology support and more.
  • Classwork, a feedback and grading tool that gives teachers easy access to unreviewed work, student portfolios and groups based on student performance.

First-of-its-kind voice-powered assessment to help educators understand and accelerate the literacy development of remote learners

BROOKLYN, New York—August 25, 2020—Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today announced the release of a voice-enabled reading assessment for grades 1–6, created in collaboration with Dublin-based SoapBox Labs, which develops accuracy and privacy driven voice technology for children. Text Reading Online is the first literacy assessment of its kind to enable remote evaluation of oral reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension—critical indicators of reading development for young readers.

“Given the realities of teaching and learning in a pandemic, educators are seeking approaches to assessing a child’s independent reading when they cannot be together in person,” said Larry Berger, chief executive officer at Amplify. “We are pleased to offer Text Reading Online as a part of the overall mCLASS literacy suite to help educators assess their students’ reading development remotely, including the accurate identification of learning loss and how best to address it, this year.”

By enabling educators to understand and evaluate fluency, accuracy, and comprehension development, even in a remote setting, Text Reading Online can help educators tailor instruction and avoid reading loss during a critical developmental stage.

To perform the assessment, students read two texts aloud: the first text is at the student’s grade level, the second is adapted based on the student’s performance on the initial text. Students then answer a set of text-dependent comprehension questions to evaluate their degree of understanding. Data from the assessment, including reading rate and specific error types, provides educators with near real-time feedback, which they can use to identify areas of focus and cater lessons to each child’s needs.

Amplify CKLA Skills becomes first ELA foundational skills program to earn all-green scores from EdReports

Amplify appoints Paul Sheppard as Chief Financial Officer

BROOKLYN, NY (January 14, 2021) — Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, announced today the appointment of Paul Sheppard as chief financial officer. Sheppard previously served as chief financial officer of Entangled (now Guild Education) and has held senior positions at several other education companies, including McGraw-Hill and Pearson.

As CFO at Entangled, a venture capital and advisory firm focused on education innovation, Sheppard helped the company implement best practices at scale across several departments, including finance, accounting, and operations. In 2020, Entangled was sold to Guild Education.

The London-based edtech startup develops and publishes unique, highly interactive, and visually compelling tools, activities, and courses that enable students to explore the beauty and power of mathematics.

Amplify announces groundbreaking digital curriculum

(AUSTIN, Texas March 3, 2014) Today at SXSWedu, Amplify unveiled its groundbreaking digital curriculum for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade English Language Arts (ELA). The curriculum for each grade combines a year’s worth of Common Core-aligned lessons, written in collaboration with some of the world’s leading experts and intellectuals, with rich digital media from Academy Award-winning studios and stars of both stage and screen.

The curriculum will be available in classrooms at the start of the Fall 2014 school year at an introductory price of $45 per student per year. It includes an e-library stocked with more than 300 works of fiction and nonfiction. To help boost learning outside of class, the curriculum comes with more than 20 immersive, digital games from some of the world’s best independent game designers. The curriculum is built on top of an education-friendly analytics engine that is designed to help students read three times more and write three times more, as well as to help teachers provide students three times more meaningful feedback.

The curriculum contains academic lessons authored by world-class intellectuals like Benjamin Franklin biographer Walter Isaacson, Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel and MacArthur Genius Grant winner Danielle Allen. We’ve paired their knowledge with Common Core experts to develop a full-year’s worth of scoped and sequenced curriculum for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade ELA, with lessons around personal narrative, fiction, informational texts, poetry and foundational documents. In addition to the books anchored in the lessons, each student has access to an e-library with more than 300 works of fiction and nonfiction.

Dramatic Readings: To help make difficult texts more interesting and accessible, Amplify has brought them to life with dramatic readings by stars of both stage and screen. Students can watch actors like Chadwick Boseman read from “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” or Elizabeth Olsen’s interpretation of “A Confederate Girl’s Diary.” School-based pilots have shown that when students watch a dramatic reading of the first chapter of a book, they’re more likely to go on and read the entire text.

Story Animations: Amplify has worked in collaboration with Academy Award-winning animators to produce visually rich, artistic renditions of some of the texts students encounter in the lessons. Captivating, high-quality depictions of “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” are tied to writing prompts and designed to help students grasp difficult literary concepts, perspectives and points of view, which are key to the Common Core.

Quests: These experiential lessons immerse students in a text through role-playing, close reading, evidence gathering, discussion and expressive writing. Students can solve Edgar Allan Poe’s murder, seek treasure as Tom Sawyer or debate signing the Declaration of Independence as a member of the Second Continental Congress, among other interactive experiences. These adventures engage students in active learning and help them develop essential Common Core skills such as critical thinking and the use of primary resources.

Vocabulary Program: Our approach to learning vocabulary is centered around hundreds of essential “reveal words” per grade. Students encounter these words in core texts and supplementary materials. Amplify’s Reveal Tool is designed to encourage students to learn a definition in context and then return to the text as seamlessly as possible. Amplify also provides ELL vocabulary activities, targeting key concrete nouns and verbs that are necessary for understanding the day’s lesson.

Teachers can use results from these diagnostic exercises to determine each student’s level of comprehension, and assign activities to meet a student where he or she is. Students can track their own progress using the analytical vocabulary tool, which tells them how many words they’ve mastered and how often they’ve used the words in their writing, empowering them to self-direct their learning goals.

Upon conclusion of Amplify’s complete ELA curriculum for middle school, students will have been exposed to 4,500 reveal words and completed more than 1,500 vocabulary practice activities.

The deal is the culmination of a close partnership between Amplify and Desmos over the past two years. Desmos’ world-renowned calculators will remain independent as part of a separate Public Benefit Corporation called Desmos Studio that will focus on the development of free, best-in-class online calculators and other tools.

The Amplify and Desmos curriculum teams will now deeply integrate the technology and content they’ve both been developing and piloting for several years. The resulting combined program, based on IM K–12 Math™, will bring together Amplify’s proven ability to deliver the highest quality STEM curriculum to millions of students, and the groundbreaking digital tools and instructional approach of Desmos. Desmos technology will also power new modes of creative, collaborative learning in the next generation of Amplify’s science and literacy core programs.

Amid ongoing national literacy crisis, Boost Reading demonstrates strong outcomes for academically vulnerable students

BROOKLYN, NY (November 29, 2023) — Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, released the results of a second year-long study on the impact of Boost Reading, a personalized learning program for elementary grades powered by the Science of Reading. Students in grades K–5—including English/multilingual learners—who used Boost Reading for 30 minutes a week significantly outperformed their peers. Students at risk for reading difficulty who used Boost Reading were 26 percent more likely than students not using Boost Reading to meet or exceed grade-level benchmarks by the end of the school year.

The study compared more than 43,000 K–5 students who used Boost Reading for at least 30 minutes a week with a group of more than 130,000 students who did not use Boost Reading, matched on key student and school characteristics. Educators measured student reading skills using DIBELS® 8th Edition, the gold-standard early reading assessment developed by the University of Oregon.

A digital, student-driven program for grades K–5, Boost Reading enables educators to support every reader in their classrooms through its adaptive technology and powerful storytelling. Boost Reading aligns with Amplify’s other early literacy programs and pairs with Boost Lectura to provide personalized English and Spanish instructional parity.

The research is rigorous: This national study from the 2021–22 school year meets the Every Student Succeeds Act’s (ESSA) Tier 2 Moderate Evidence criteria, showing significant and positive effects on student outcomes. Notably, 62 percent of at-risk English/multilingual kindergarten students in the Boost Reading group finished the year at benchmark or above, compared to 47 percent of students in the comparison group.

Amplify announces acquisition of assessment provider Math ANEX

BROOKLYN, NY (April 3, 2024) – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today announced the acquisition of Math ANEX, a pioneering math assessment provider renowned for its innovative asset-based approach which focuses on analyzing students’ mathematical thinking.

Math ANEX will become a key feature of Amplify’s mCLASS Math product, helping educators go beyond the limitations of binary score reporting, explore deep analysis of student thinking, and build on the assets students showcase. This asset-based approach highlights students’ mathematical capabilities, showcasing evidence of what they can do, rather than making assumptions about what they cannot.

By identifying students’ often overlooked mathematical assets, DEMI helps inform more effective instructional action, empowering teachers to leverage and build on those existing student assets. The integration of DEMI into mCLASS Math will help Amplify further its ambitious vision for math assessments, including:

  • assessment items that are carefully designed to prompt student thinking about essential math;
  • additional assessment items that cover the remaining skills and standards;
  • the ability to tag and auto-score open-ended student responses to analyze student thinking and performance;
  • detailed insights and actionable instructional recommendations for teachers; and
  • aggregate reports that inform district-level decision-making for administrators.

ANEX currently serves nearly 220,000 students across more than 15 U.S. school districts, including the San Diego Unified School District, the second largest district in California. Math ANEX founder and CEO Patrick Callahan will join Amplify to support the company’s math suite.

New study provides evidence that assessing multilingual students in their home languages can improve educational outcomes

BROOKLYN, NY (June 27, 2024) – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today released a first-of-its-kind research brief that demonstrates the benefits of dual-language assessment in early literacy. The brief summarized a new study of 21,000 K–3 Spanish-speaking multilingual learners (MLs) who have Spanish literacy data from mCLASS® Lectura assessments and English literacy data from mCLASS DIBELS® 8th Edition assessments from the beginning, middle, and end of the 2023-2024 school year.

Findings reveal that using only English-language assessments for early literacy can lead to a higher rate of misidentifying Spanish-speaking MLs as at-risk for reading difficulties, underscoring the importance of comprehensive dual-language assessments that help educators better understand their students’ early literacy skills.

Currently, the industry relies on English-only approaches to assessment that not only underestimate a multilingual student’s reading comprehension ability, but may also give educators incomplete information to guide instructional planning for multilingual students.

“For too long, the industry has relied on an early literacy assessment standard for MLs that is, in many ways, flawed,” said Susan Lambert, chief academic officer of Elementary Humanities at Amplify. “It’s time to begin assessing MLs in English and their home language to understand their early literacy needs better and ultimately improve their educational outcomes.”

A dual-language approach for early literacy assessment has powerful implications, including:

  • Providing more accurate information about whether students need intervention
  • Giving educators a more complete understanding of students’ literacy skills, including which skills they possess in each language
  • Helping educators support students’ language development needs with more precision

“Although the availability of universal screening assessments for Spanish-speaking MLs has increased in recent years, it’s still not where it needs to be,” said Kajal Patel Below, vice president of biliteracy at Amplify. “Our hope is that this study will shed light on the extent to which the identification of reading intervention support varies for MLs when assessed in both their home language and in English.”

New report: Data highlights significant summer instructional loss from the youngest students, reinforcing the importance of strong core instruction in early literacy

BROOKLYN, NY (October 31, 2024) – Amplify, a publisher of next-generation curriculum and assessment programs, today released a research brief on beginning-of-school-year reading data for K–3 students. Findings reveal that recent gains in K–3 early literacy have stalled overall, and that the youngest learners are demonstrating concerning instructional loss over the summer. Students progressing from kindergarten to first grade are the most vulnerable because they have received the least amount of explicit instruction to reinforce foundational reading skills: as many as one in four students return from their summer break no longer on track for core instruction. 

The report compares K–3 literacy data from the past six school years to analyze the effect of instructional loss on student learning. Across grades K–3, the number of students at risk for not learning to read has yet to improve more than pre-pandemic levels, and only half of students are on track to read at grade level. 

“What this really points to is the importance of quality core instruction for young students. Quality instruction should be systematic, cumulative, and explicit. And of course, reading instruction should be informed by assessment data,” said Susan Lambert, chief academic officer of elementary humanities at Amplify. “This data helps educators identify strengths and areas for growth, enabling them to provide strong foundational support for their youngest students.”

In the report, Amplify outlines recommendations for educators as they begin the school year. Schools and districts can support students by:

  • Ensuring that all students receive quality instruction grounded in evidence-based practices such as the Science of Reading
  • Identifying students who need additional support and developing a plan for addressing their needs
  • Allocating resources for additional support and implementing those plans
  • Regularly monitoring progress for students and making adjustments as needed

“Schools and districts should consider explicit instructional practices that provide more frequent opportunities for students to reinforce their reading skills,” continued Lambert. “The good news is that when evidence-based instruction takes place in the earliest possible grades, research shows that most students can be taught to read at or approaching grade level.”
