Description

  • Mastery: Student is given the parts of a compound word and is able to immediately produce the word. Compound word might not be commonly used, but not necessarily unfamiliar.
  • Acquiring: Student is given the parts of a familiar compound word, indicating separate parts when voiced, and he/she is able to produce the word.

Considerations & Reminders

  • When blending compound words, teachers may want to keep an ear out for students that begin to confuse onset and rimes with the blending of compound words.
  • The transition song, “Take a Word Apart” (above) is another way for teachers to show students that compound words are made up two separate words – not all students might understand this concept immediately.
