Standard

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.B: Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

Description

Mastery: Student silently recognizes “qu” as a chunk, looks at the vowel that comes after c/g (to determine soft or hard sound) and decodes regularly spelled one-syllable words with “qu” and soft & hard c/g with automaticity.

Acquiring: Student decodes the word with “qu,” or c/g (sound by sound), before blending. Student self-corrects if he/she initially says the wrong sound (soft or hard) for c/g. Student may need a reminder from the teacher or help from a sound/spelling card.

Probes

T: Read the words: queen, cent, giant, gem, guess, quack, camp, sage, rice, beg

Considerations & Reminders

  • When making the /k/, /g/ and /kw/ sounds, teachers should be careful not to add the schwa sound.
  • Students may need the help of letter/sound cards or anchor charts to help them decode words with the soft c or soft g sounds.
