Webinar: Constructing Comprehension: The Contribution of Background Knowledge

Knowledge is the result of and the reason for building deep comprehension. The ability to acquire knowledge from text is dependent on accessing multiple sources including lexical, linguistic, cultural, domain/background knowledge, and personal experiences. This session will focus on building background knowledge which can be described as the “mental velcro that gives the words of the text places to stick and make sense, thereby supporting comprehension and propelling the reading process forward” (Adams, 2015). Let’s explore the evidence related to the what, why, and how of background knowledge—including activities for accessing, building and connecting—to what is most necessary to understand text.
