Diversity, equity, and inclusion in mCLASS

Literacy is essential. Like many other important endeavors, it even has a deadline. “Reading proficiently by the end of third grade can be a make-or-break benchmark in a child’s educational development,” warns a special report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. That’s because fourth grade is where students make the shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”—using their reading skills to learn other subjects. And students who are not on track with reading by grade 3 are four times less likely than their peers to graduate by age 19—or at all.

Overview

Educators are no doubt aware of the gravity of this challenge. And it’s not just about gravity; it’s about opportunity—making the most of the earliest chance to launch students into a lifetime of loving to read.

That’s why it is vital to stand for—even fight for—access to high-quality assessment and curriculum starting in the very early grades. We have a responsibility to provide literacy instruction that gives every student the same opportunity to succeed, even excel. In mCLASS®, that begins with better data—data you trust to drive equal opportunity in classrooms nationwide and assessments that help educators gain deep insight into each and every student as a reader.

Diverse representation

Diverse texts in Text Reading and Comprehension

The mCLASS assessment program for Text Reading and Comprehension engages students with a diverse set of text types, genres, topics, and time periods. The wide range of informational and literary texts provides access to different cultures and perspectives, allowing students to build on their own experiences and expand their view of the world around them.

The text set extends the everyday knowledge and experiences of students to provide exposure to a wide range of subjects. The texts include fables and new folklore, mythology, historical fiction, and informational pieces from various time periods and cultures. The illustrations and graphics represent characters with various ethnic backgrounds and special needs.

Representation in data collection and performance

mCLASS assessments employ the highest standards of development procedures and include diverse populations in the study samples to ensure that assessment content is accessible by and functional for students of all different backgrounds.

Equitable pedagogy

The mCLASS® literacy suite of assessment and instruction is designed to help educators understand each child as a reader, in both English and Spanish. It’s our mission to ensure that students of every background and reading proficiency receive an accurate and actionable measurement of where they stand as readers, and the instruction they need to continue to grow.

Dyslexia screening

Screening for students at risk of dyslexia is included free of charge in the program, helping educators adequately monitor and support their students who need it the most. Catching at-risk students early in their literacy journey is critical for their long-term development as readers.

Dual language reporting

Dual language reporting allows educators to adjust the pedagogy to support Spanish-speaking students in both their heritage language and English literacy development.

District reports

When districts include the appropriate demographic fields in enrollment data, mCLASS leadership reports help districts identify potential achievement gaps as early as the first month of kindergarten and then track how gaps are closed over time.

Inclusive classroom community

mCLASS treats every student as the unique individual that they are. Through one-on-one assessment, targeted instruction, and unique student reports for both teachers and caregivers at home, mCLASS provides every child with the detailed and actionable skill profile they need to excel in their reading journey.

Teacher-administered assessment

mCLASS provides a teacher-administered assessment, which ultimately provides for a more valid and personal experience for children compared to placing them in front of a computer screen. Teachers can build genuine relationships with all of their students through face-to-face interactions, as opposed to the artificial experience students encounter with online assessing.

Home Connect

Caregivers also receive reports on their child’s progress through mCLASS’s Home Connect site, including additional activities for families to choose from to help reinforce and practice critical reading skills with their children. This site is available in both English and Spanish.

Small group activities

mCLASS treats every student as the unique individual that they are.Through one-on-one assessment, targeted instruction, and unique student reports for both teachers and caregivers at home, mCLASS provides every child with the detailed and actionable skill profile they need to excel in their reading journey.

mCLASS Intervention, which is part of the mCLASS product family, is a student grouping tool that analyzes students’ assessments and provides activities that give every student a meaningful role to play in the lesson.

Amplify's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Our goal is to make education, and thereby the world, more equitable.
We create education products that celebrate difference in life and thought as well as ideals we may hold in common.

We help teachers craft rigorous learning experiences that reflect the diverse histories, cultures, and identities their students bring to the classroom.

We also help teachers support their students in constructing, questioning, expanding, and strengthening knowledge of where they come from and who they are becoming.

To do this, we hire and develop people with the broadest range of talents, life stories and experiences, and together we build a diverse and inclusive culture.
