FAQ
- What is Amplify?
- Amplify is a free service that makes it easy to spark conversation about any web page, paragraph, sentence, image or video you find on the web. Instead of just creating a short URL, Amplify lets you engage in conversation with people you share your online findings with.
- How do I start Amplifying pages, paragraphs, images and videos I find on the web?
- Does Amplify sync with services like Twitter and Facebook?
- Yes, Amplify syncs with Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Posterous, Diigo, Bit.ly, Friendfeed, Delicious and Clipmarks.com. To enable syncing with any of these sites, click the Settings link in the header, then choose “Connect Your Amplog” and select any of the services you want to enable.
- Can I use Bit.ly URLs for things I share with Amplify?
- Yes, just visit your Settings page and click the link under “More Settings” to Enable Bit.ly URLs.

- The Amplify Firefox extension seems to have disappeared from my browser. What can I do to get it back?
- To get the Amplify button back in Firefox, click View >> Toolbar >> Customize. Then, in the window that opens scroll to the bottom and look for the Amplify icon. If you see it, drag it from the window back to the top of Firefox wherever you want it located. We’re looking into a more permanent solution to preventing this from happening, but this should restore it.
- Can I Amplify video?
- Yes. With the Amplify bookmarklet, you can Amplify online video from sites including Youtube, CNN, WSJ, Reuters, CBSNews, The Daily Show, CNet, Ted.com, Blip.tv, Vimeo and many others.
- What’s the difference between a Direct Message and a general comment on Amplify?
- General comments are public for anyone to see while Direct Messages let you engage in private conversations with other users on Amplify. You can only send direct messages to users who follow you.
- Is Amplify free?
- For now, all aspects of Amplify are free. We plan to work on some optional premium features that will hopefully be introduced soon.
- I see that Amplify also supports groups. Explain.
- Amplify can be used by businesses, organizations, class rooms or any other group to create a community web site for members to share and discuss what they’re reading on the web. Amplify groups can be synced with Twitter and Facebook as a way for organizations to have a meaningful presence on the social web or they can be kept private within the enterprise to facilitate shared knowledge and communication around what members are reading on the web.
- Since Amplify was created by the team at Clipmarks, why was it created as a separate service instead of being part of Clipmarks.com?
- We really didn’t want to disturb the user experience or community on Clipmarks.com, but we wanted a way to better support Twitter and Facebook users as well as groups. After a lot of consideration, we decided that the best way to do this would be to create Amplify as a separate service from Clipmarks, but give people who want to participate on both an easy way to sync the two.
Portions of the Amplify website and/or clipping technology may be covered by United States Patent Numbers 7216290, 7278092, 7360166, 7562287.
